Over two-thirds of Americans wary of AI threats

A Reuters/Ipsos survey revealed that Americans are increasingly concerned about the possible threats presented by artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

The survey, which was conducted between May 9 and May 15, included the views of 4,415 U.S. adults and revealed that more than two-thirds of respondents were concerned about the negative effects of AI. 61% of those polled feel that AI has the potential to threaten civilization.

According to the study, the proportion of Americans who expect negative results from AI is three times larger than those who are indifferent. 61% of participants acknowledged the possible concerns connected with AI, while 22% disagreed, leaving 17% undecided.

The poll discovered differences in sentiments depending on political and religious convictions. Notably, 70% of Trump supporters in the 2020 election expressed concern about AI’s possible harm to humanity, compared to 60% of Joe Biden supporters. Furthermore, when it came to theological viewpoints, Evangelical Christians were more likely than non-Evangelical Christians to “strongly agree” with the idea of AI bringing hazards to mankind, with 32% expressing this opinion compared to 24% of non-Evangelical Christians.

The credibility interval of the poll, which measures accuracy, is plus or minus 2 percentage points.
