In an interview with Reuters, Qualcomm’s new CEO, Cristiano Amon, said the company plans to design its own system-on-a-chip (SoC) for laptops without its smartphone chip partner, ARM.

While the SoC will include a 5G modem as well as a CPU, Amon said Qualcomm plans to use Nuvia, a company founded by former Apple employees.

Employees worked on Apple’s Silicon Transition, which spawned the M1 and was acquired by Qualcomm for $1.4 billion, to advance the development of new chips for consumer devices that offer computer manufacturers another option for Apple’s breakthrough technology.
