While technology platforms such as Google, Facebook, Telegram, and LinkedIn have either fully or partially complied with India’s new IT rules, the nation’s new rules have proved highly controversial.
The rules require firms to appoint and share contact details of representatives tasked with compliance, the nodal point of reference and grievance redressals to address on-ground concerns.
It remains questionable whether technology companies will allow the Indian government access to the source of the news.
Although it remains unclear whether Apple and Signal complied with the rules, WhatsApp has sued the Indian government over the provision to introduce a way to track down the source of the messages.
WhatsApp says it will compromise its users’ data if it decides to follow the rules, which is clearly against its mandate.
