Impersonating fraud otherwise known as “smishing” is one of the techniques used by criminals to deceive and steal from unsuspecting consumers by using texts pretending to be from trusted organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This type of fraud is now commonly associated with parcel delivery, where fraudsters send text messages claiming that a small payment is needed to deliver a package to millions of mobile users as they look to steal personal banking information from unsuspecting consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This type of fraud took center stage during the pandemic when the world resorted to online transactions and sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But it was no surprise that over time, the scam of parcel delivery became more sophisticated, making it even more convincing to many who might not be paying close attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Laura Suter, a personal finance analyst at AJ Bell, “Everyone thinks they are smart enough to spot a scam text, but the messages have become so sophisticated that it’s easy to be caught out. Lots of people will also see the text when they are in a hurry to receive their package or are rushing, so won’t stop to think about whether it’s legitimate or not.”<\/p>\n\n\n
