The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently announced it was launching an investigation into Tesla’s “self-driving” Autopilot system as it looks to solve the mystery behind 11 Tesla crashes involving emergency vehicles since 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agency made clear that it is concerned about the inability of Tesla vehicles to cope with vehicles stopped on the road, especially emergency vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The investigation concerns about 765,000 Tesla cars made since 2014, including the Model Y, Model X, Model S and Model 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the NHTSA, it launched a preliminary investigation into “the technologies and methods used to monitor, assist, and enforce the driver’s engagement” while using Tesla’s Autopilot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NHSTA said that the 11 accidents that triggered the investigation saw either Autopilot or a system called Traffic-Aware Cruise Control active “just prior” the collisions.<\/p>\n\n\n
