John Edwards has been named the next head data regulator at the U.K. Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). He will reportedly be responsible for the “shake-up” of data rules following Brexit, particularly the removal of cookie pop-ups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The U.K. Government says it would prioritize the establishment of new “data adequacy” partnerships that allow people’s data to be transferred internationally, unlike the deal it had with the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Current Commissioner Elizabeth Denham has often been criticized by some privacy advocates for not being courageous enough in tackling and protecting data rights. Conversely, the British government indicated that Edwards “will be empowered to go beyond the traditional role of the regulator to focus solely on protecting data rights, with a clear mandate to take a balanced approach that fosters further innovation and economic growth.”<\/p>\n\n\n
