{"id":13050,"date":"2021-10-01T09:51:12","date_gmt":"2021-10-01T13:51:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.technewsday.com\/?p=13050"},"modified":"2021-10-04T14:49:41","modified_gmt":"2021-10-04T18:49:41","slug":"senators-say-facebook-research-shows-company-knew-of-instagram-harm-to-teens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/technewsday.com\/staging\/senators-say-facebook-research-shows-company-knew-of-instagram-harm-to-teens\/","title":{"rendered":"Senators Say Facebook Research Shows Company Knew of Instagram Harm to Teens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-ar-index=\"0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. senators on Thursday grilled Facebook on its plans to better protect young users on its apps.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-ar-index=\"0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hearings focused heavily on leaked internal research that showed the social media giant was aware of how its app, Instagram, adversely affected the mental health of teens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-ar-index=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heard before the Senate consumer protection subcommittee, the audit was called after the Wall Street Journal published stories earlier this month about how Facebook knew Instagram caused harm for many many teen girls to feel badly about their self-image.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-ar-index=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antigone Davis, Facebook\u2019s global head of safety, disputed the committee and WSJ\u2019s conclusions during the hearing, saying the company would be releasing additional internal studies to come in an effort to be more transparent about findings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-ar-index=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The senators grilled Davis on a number of issues, such as what identifiable data Facebook collects on users under 13 years and to what extent the social media giant views young users as a growth area.
