Former U.S. Army contractor Fredrick Brown has been sentenced to 151 months in prison after admitting his role in a conspiracy that victimized thousands of U.S. service members and veterans and caused millions of dollars in losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Brown was one of five fraudsters accused of running an identity theft and fraud program that targeted “service members (active duty, reserve component, and National Guard) and veterans, their dependents, and civilians employed by the Department of Defense,” according to the 14-count indictment released in August 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Brown pleaded guilty in October 2019 and admitted that he stole personal identifying information from thousands of military personnel between July 2014 and September 2015, including “their names, social security numbers, DOD ID numbers, dates of birth, and contact information.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Brown handed the stolen data over to co-defendant Robert Wayne Boling Jr. and other members of the transnational fraud ring, who then used the data to compromise the login accounts of military personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This enabled members of the conspiracy to access U.S. military community benefits info via the Department of Defense portal and steal millions of dollars in veterans’ retirement and disability benefits, as well as U.S. military members’ bank accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n
