{"id":13242,"date":"2021-10-06T10:06:39","date_gmt":"2021-10-06T14:06:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.technewsday.com\/?p=13242"},"modified":"2021-12-10T14:32:31","modified_gmt":"2021-12-10T19:32:31","slug":"lawmakers-demand-probe-after-facebook-whistleblower-revelations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/technewsday.com\/staging\/lawmakers-demand-probe-after-facebook-whistleblower-revelations\/","title":{"rendered":"Lawmakers Demand Probe After Facebook Whistleblower Revelations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Following the recent revelations by whistleblower Frances Haugen, U.S. lawmakers are now calling on regulators to take the necessary action against Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Haugen previously worked as a former product manager on Facebook&#8217;s civic misinformation team and accused Facebook of putting revenue before user safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senator Marsha Blackburn, a Republican, accused Facebook of turning a blind eye to the plight of children under 13 on its platform, &#8220;It is clear that Facebook prioritizes profit over the well-being of children and all users.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>U.S. Senator Edward Markey, a Democrat from Massachusetts directed a statement to Mark Zuckerberg, who was absent. &#8220;Your (Facebook&#8217;s) time of invading our privacy and preying on children is over. Congress will be taking action.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Haugen testified during a Senate committee meeting: &#8220;There is no one currently holding Mark (Zuckerberg, the Facebook chief executive) to account. The buck stops with Mark.
