Canada’s Public Safety Minister, Marco Mendicino, stated that the country intends to host a meeting of G7 representatives next year to develop new programs and tools to combat disinformation.<\/p>\n
A summit in Canada would serve as a way to \u201cflip the script, and to get ahead of the curve of disinformation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is where we think that Canada and the G7 can show leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mendicino said the \u201cmarketplace for disinformation\u201d is much greater than the \u201cmarketplace for reliable information\u201d and that Canadians need help to determine which is which.<\/p>\n
He also said big tech and social media platforms need to make sure they are \u201cadhering to the terms and conditions of their own user agreements\u201d to challenge disinformation.<\/p>\n
Mendicino said democracies also need to engage with social media firms and big tech to better understand how information is presented and make sure \u201cthat they are, as much as possible, adhering to the terms and conditions of their own user agreements,\u201d calling it a long-standing challenge.<\/p>\n
