{"id":38096,"date":"2023-05-08T12:56:28","date_gmt":"2023-05-08T16:56:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.itworldcanada.com?p=538329"},"modified":"2023-05-09T16:04:39","modified_gmt":"2023-05-09T20:04:39","slug":"former-uber-cso-sentenced-to-probation-for-data-breach-cover-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/technewsday.com\/staging\/former-uber-cso-sentenced-to-probation-for-data-breach-cover-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Uber CSO sentenced to probation for data breach cover-up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former Uber Technologies chief security officer (CSO) Joseph Sullivan was sentenced to probation Thursday for trying to cover up a 2016 data breach and theft of tens of millions of customer records, <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/wireStory\/uber-security-chief-sentenced-data-breach-cover-99095920\"  rel=\"noopener\">the Associated Press said.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itworldcanada.com\/article\/ex-uber-cso-convicted-of-cover-up-in-2016-data-breach\/506957\"  rel=\"noopener\">Convicted last October<\/a> by a jury of hiding the incident from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, Sullivan was sentenced to three years&#8217; probation and ordered to pay a fine of US$50,000.<\/p>\n<p>His conviction was the first criminal prosecution of a company official over a data breach.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-10-05\/uber-s-former-security-chief-is-convicted-of-data-hack-coverup\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg News reported<\/a>\u00a0the San Francisco jury rejected his defence that other executives knew about the coverup and were responsible, convicting him of obstructing a government investigation and concealing the theft of personal data of 50 million customers and 7 million drivers. That included over 800,000 Canadians.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors had recommended a sentence of 15 months in federal prison.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I think that considering the guilty verdict, Judge Orrick&#8217;s sentencing of Joe to three years probation and 200 community service hours, was well balanced and appropriate,&#8221; commented Avishai Avivi, CISO of SafeBreach.
