{"id":5935,"date":"2021-05-25T09:28:30","date_gmt":"2021-05-25T13:28:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.technewsday.com\/?p=5935"},"modified":"2021-08-03T11:10:03","modified_gmt":"2021-08-03T15:10:03","slug":"biden-cuts-broadband-plan-for-gop-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/technewsday.com\/staging\/biden-cuts-broadband-plan-for-gop-support\/","title":{"rendered":"Biden Cuts Broadband Plan For GOP Support"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"arIndex_0\" data-ar-index=\"0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Biden has agreed to cut his broadband-deployment proposal from $100 billion to $65 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"arIndex_1\" data-ar-index=\"0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the same amount proposed by Republicans as they attempt to gain their support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"arIndex_2\" data-ar-index=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Republicans still object to Biden&#8217;s overall infrastructure spending plan,\u00a0with Biden&#8217;s proposed priority on municipal broadband networks getting particular opposition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"arIndex_3\" data-ar-index=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Biden team is trying to reach 100% high-speed broadband coverage across the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"arIndex_4\" data-ar-index=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These municipal broadband networks, which will be run by local governments, non-profits, and co-ops, could spell a significant change from previous U.S. spending programs that spent billions to support private internet providers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"arIndex_5\" data-ar-index=\"4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Republicans have fought hard against public broadband for years, even initiating a nationwide ban on municipal broadband networks. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"arIndex_6\" data-ar-index=\"6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The White House informed Republicans of Biden&#8217;s willingness to trim $35 billion from his broadband proposal in a memo last Friday.
