U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday nominated lawyer and Google critic Jonathan Kanter as the Justice Department’s chief making him the third antitrust critic chosen by Biden’s administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is the latest move by the White House, which is determined to rein in big tech corporations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Biden administration also selected two other progressive antitrust lawyers with technological experience: Tim Wu for the National Economic Council and Lina Khan as commissioner of the Federal Trade Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After Kanter’s nomination is confirmed by the Senate, he will take over the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division amid calls for overall tougher enforcement, with particular criticism directed at Google, Facebook, Amazon and Apple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This will be crucial to the implementation of the executive order issued by the Biden administration to promote competition throughout the U.S. economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Major technology companies have been under investigation for about two years with U.S. House of Representatives officials releasing a report in October alleging that companies were charging exorbitant fees and forcing small businesses into “repressive” contracts in the name of profit.<\/p>\n\n\n
