X to launch video, audio calls

Elon Musk’s social media platform X, formerly Twitter, is planning to launch video and audio calling features. The features will be available on Apple’s iOS, Google’s Android, and personal computers, and users will not need a phone number to use them.

Musk announced the plans in a post on X. He said that the features are “coming” but did not give a specific launch date.

The launch of video and audio calling features is part of Musk’s vision to turn X into a “super app” that offers a range of services, from messaging and social networking to peer-to-peer payments. The vision brings to mind Tencent’s WeChat app, which is a ubiquitous part of daily life in China.

Musk has been making a number of changes to X since he acquired the company in October 2022. In addition to the video and audio calling features, he has also rolled out an edit button, cracked down on spam bots, and made changes to the platform’s algorithm.
