The world’s largest airline coalition, Star Alliance, wants about half of its 26 members to use biometric technology, including facial recognition, which allows individuals to use their face as a boarding pass, by 2025.
With increasing demand for contactless travel and a reduction in the number of passengers after COVID-19, the group wants half of its members either to use its biometric method or to ensure compatibility so that processing time, baggage drop-offs and other airport activities are faster. Star Alliance hopes that the four European airports participating in its biometric program will add further touchpoints and increase the number of participating airports.
It also wants to explore ways of facilitating travel by introducing biometric data at different points in the airport, but notes that the use of biometric data at airports differs regionally in some countries due to different data protection rules and a lack of technical expertise, which makes it difficult to implement the technology.
