Suncor energy reports cybersecurity breach

Suncor Energy have announced that an unauthorized party accessed its IT network on or around June 21. The company confirmed the breach after conducting an extensive investigation into the matter.

The incident impacted the company’s Petro-Points loyalty program, and some Petro-Canada retail and wholesale distribution businesses experienced temporary disruptions. However, the company said that the incident has not impacted the safety and reliability of its field operations.

Suncor’s field operations remain unaffected, but temporary disruptions were experienced by its Petro-Canada retail and wholesale distribution business. Also, the company acknowledges that certain transactions with customers and suppliers may have been affected.

As a result of the incident, Suncor replaced employee computers and implemented additional security measures throughout the company. It also confirmed that it is investigating the incident and that it is taking steps to strengthen its cybersecurity defenses.

Suncor also assured the public that these disruptions have been primarily resolved.
