Suspicious Threads domains on the rise

July 11, 2023

There has been a surge in the creation of suspicious domains related to Threads. These domains cleverly mimic the legitimate Threads app or use variations in their names to mislead users and distribute malware.

Veriti says that over 700 domains associated with Threads are being registered every day. One of the newly registered domains is “Threadsapk[.]download,” which shows signs of being a phishing attempt. The goal of this attempt is to trick users into giving up sensitive information or credentials.

The domain “Threadsappz[.]com” also offers an Android version of the app for download. In reality, all it does is redirect users to an external source, Google Drive, where they can get the APK file.

Others include threads.ovh, whatisthreads.com, socialthreads.store, threadsapk.download, threadsfollower.org, threadsmeme.com, bestofthreads.com, threadsapp.dev, metathreads.social, threadsexpert.com, threads-apk.org, metathreads.website, threadsapp.shop, threadspix.com, tthreadsfollowers.com, threadsl.com, and threadsinstagram.app.

The sources for this piece include an article in Veriti.
