T-Mobile CEO Apologizes For Massive Hack Last Week

August 30, 2021

T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert released a statement about the massive hack on the wireless carrier that exposed the sensitive information of millions of customers, apologizing for the leak and announced a partnership with Mandiant on cybersecurity.

“The last two weeks have been humbling for all of us at T-Mobile as we have worked tirelessly to navigate a malicious cyberattack on our systems. Knowing that we failed to prevent this exposure is one of the hardest parts of this event. On behalf of everyone at Team Magenta, I want to say we are truly sorry.”

Sievert said the wireless giant has partnered with Mandiant to conduct an investigation into the incident and stated it had since closed the server entry points that gave the hacker, allegedly 21-year-old John Binns, access to T-Mobile customer data.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal on Thursday, Binns openly claimed responsibility for the hack while criticizing T-Mobile’s mediocre cybersecurity.

T-Mobile stated that in addition to a group of 850,000 active T-Mobile prepaid customers whose names, phone numbers and account PINs were also disclosed, another 667,000 accounts of former T-Mobile customers were stolen.
