Having laid off thousands of staff, leading tech companies such as Google, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, and Salesforce have lately hired overseas labor according to Lee Fang, an investigative journalist.
Google, which made headlines earlier this year when it let off 12,000 staff, is said to have submitted applications for low-wage overseas labor to fill highly specialized tasks within the corporation. Fang noted in his Substack newsletter that these applications covered a wide range of occupations, including software engineers, analytical consultants, and user experience researchers.
Furthermore, Waymo, the Google-owned autonomous driving business, has received federal permission for H-1B visa applications focused exclusively on engineering roles. Surprisingly, Google is not alone in its recruiting binge. Meta, Amazon, Zoom, Salesforce, Microsoft, and Palantir have also applied for H-1B visas in large numbers. According to Fang, these tech firms have hired lobbyists to put pressure on Congress and the Biden administration to expand the H-1B visa program.
Notably, the new foreign staff are anticipated to begin working for Google as soon as August 17, according to Fang’s report.
