Tech giants pledge to combat AI-generated child sex abuse images

October 31, 2023

Tech giants such as TikTok, Snapchat, Stability AI along with 24 other prominent entities, including the United States, Germany, and Australia, have come together to take a collective stand against the proliferation of child sex abuse images created by artificial intelligence.

The announcement was made during a high-profile event organized by the United Kingdom in anticipation of a global AI safety summit later this week.

The joint statement, reads, “We are dedicated to maintaining an ongoing discourse and fostering technical advancements in the fight against child sexual abuse in the era of AI.” This commitment extends to the responsible utilization of AI technology in tackling the grave threat of child sexual abuse. The signatories pledge to continue their collaborative efforts to prevent AI from becoming an insurmountable risk in the fight against child sexual abuse.

The urgency of this alliance stems from alarming data revealed by the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), showing that one dark web forum had shared nearly 3,000 AI-generated child sexual abuse images. “It is imperative that we set a precedent and eradicate the misuse of this emerging technology before it gains a stronger foothold,” emphasized Susie Hargreaves, CEO of the IWF.
