Telus has world first: ISO 31700-1 Privacy by Design Certification for GenAI tool

May 21, 2024 TELUS, the Canadian telecommunications company has announced that its generative AI (GenAI) customer support tool is the first in the world to receive the ISO 31700-1 Privacy by Design certification. This certification, which TELUS also obtained previously for its Data for Good program, highlights the company’s ongoing commitment to privacy and data protection.

Developed by TELUS International, the GenAI tool, named Fuel iX, offers TELUS customers rapid and intuitive responses to their inquiries, enhancing their overall digital experience while ensuring privacy is maintained at all levels of operation.

Pam Snively, Chief Data & Trust Officer at TELUS, stated, “Our commitment at TELUS is to embed privacy into the design and functionality of our technologies from the ground up. Achieving this certification for our GenAI support tool demonstrates our focus on protecting user data.”

TELUS’ approach includes a comprehensive Responsible AI program and a rigorous testing protocol known as Purple Teaming. This method combines offensive and defensive strategies to identify and mitigate potential risks effectively, thereby enhancing the reliability and security of the AI applications.

The certification process was led by the global auditing firm KPMG, which confirmed the tool’s compliance with international privacy standards.

“This certification reaffirms our commitment to responsible AI development and deployment,” said Tobias Dengel, President of WillowTree, a TELUS International Company, and General Manager of Fuel iX.

TELUS wants to be seen as a leader in ethical AI use, and notes that this is further demonstrated by its engagement with Canada’s voluntary code of conduct for generative AI and its proactive participation in global discussions on responsible AI practices.
