TikTok’s future in America remains bleak

January 5, 2023

As the parent company of TikTok, ByteDance, faces uncertainty and sanctions from the American government, 2023 will be critical. America has been working hard to clip TikTok’s wings since last year.

America has taken numerous actions against TikTok. One resulted from a skepticism toward the app and its Chinese parent company, ByteDance. This viewpoint allegedly resulted in sanctions, strict laws, and, later, a ban on federal government-owned devices.

According to Reuters, 19 of the 50 states now restrict TikTok access on government computers, with the majority of the bans enacted over a two-week period last month. This is in addition to the restrictions imposed by school districts and other parts of the government.

Even its security agreement with the Biden administration to continue operations in the United States was reportedly postponed due to a growing backlash from American politicians who questioned the platform’s ties to China.

Again, in the midst of a trade war with China, distrust of ByteDance is the rare tech issue on which Republicans and Democrats agree.

TikTok’s future is uncertain as a result of all of this.
