Top Russian Meat Producer Suffers Cyberattack

March 23, 2022

One of Russia’s biggest meat producers, Miratorg Agribusiness Holding has suffered a major cyberattack.

The incident was confirmed by the Russian federal veterinary and phytosanitary supervision service, Rosselkhoznadzor.

According to Rosselkhoznadzor, the attackers use the BitLocker feature to encrypt the company’s files. The agency further confirmed that the attack was a sabotage attack and not for financial gains.

The attackers used VetIS, a state information system used by veterinary services and companies as a point of compromise.

Since VeTIS is integrated into tens of thousands of Russian and foreign software systems, the attack is regarded as a supply chain compromise.

Miratorg has assured that it was working towards restoring the smooth running of its business. Miratorg stated that the attack will not affect its supply and shipments to Russian citizens.

Rosselkhoznadzor will help Miratorg reduce the impact of the attack by temporarily lifting the strict documentation requirements for the movement of its products.
