TSMC plans to expand Arizona Factory

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC), the world’s largest contract chipmaker and a major supplier to Apple, is planning another multibillion-dollar factory investment in Arizona that could serve as the company’s second chip factory in the state.

TSMC said it plans to announce a state-of-the-art semiconductor plant on the northwestern outskirts of Phoenix in the coming months, alongside another chip factory it has committed to building by 2020. Sources say the size of the investment will be comparable to the $12 billion pledged two years ago.

The new plant will be able to produce 3-nanometer transistors, which are among the smallest and fastest currently available.

The company said the building could be used for future expansions, but no final decision has been made on a second chip manufacturing plant.

The expansion plans come shortly after America promised to provide lucrative subsidies to semiconductor manufacturers to bring advanced manufacturing back to American soil. America has also encouraged foreign technology companies to manufacture in the country, and has actively supported local research, development, and manufacturing since the CHIPS Act was passed, which TSMC appears to have taken advantage of.
