Many users were unable to access Twitter’s website on Monday, while others reported problems viewing photos and clicking through links in the app, marking one of the most widespread service disruptions to date under new owner Elon Musk.
People in the United States joined those in the United Kingdom, Australia, Portugal, Brazil, and Japan in complaining about difficulties accessing their accounts. Those who were able to access their accounts reported that images and videos were not loading. Because some people were able to use it on their phones, the issue was trending on Twitter.
The outage tracking service Downdetector reported over 8,000 incidents of people reporting problems. The website compiles status reports from a variety of sources, including user-submitted platform errors.
Musk stated on Twitter that the issue was caused by a minor change in Twitter’s data-access tool. “For no apparent reason, the code stack is extremely brittle. Will eventually necessitate a complete rewrite,” He stated.
Twitter’s support account tweeted recent changes had caused “unintended consequences” it was trying to rectify. It said: “Some parts of Twitter may not be working as expected right now. “We made an internal change that had some unintended consequences. We’re working on this now and will share an update when it’s fixed.”
It later tweeted that the issue was resolved and “things should be working as normal.”
