Twitter rolls back official tag immediately after roll-out

November 10, 2022

A recently announced official label has disappeared, just days after Twitter announced the feature as a double verification label for select verified accounts, such as major media companies, celebrities, governments and their officials, who were also subscribers to the $8 monthly Twitter Blue.

On the same day that the new official label for Twitter accounts went online, Elon Musk said in a tweet on Wednesday that he had “killed” it.

“Please note that Twitter will do lots of dumb things in coming months,” he tweeted. “We will keep what works & change what doesn’t.”

The official tag was spotted on the pages of previously verified football clubs and news agencies and appeared on the selected accounts in the same way that “United States government official” appeared on President Joe Biden’s Twitter account.

Musk revised his decision on the official label just a day after Twitter product manager Esther Crawford announced that the new mark, recently discovered in internal testing, will apply to select accounts, and that it cannot be purchased or automatically assigned to previously verified accounts.

The segregation on Twitter includes Twitter Blue, subscribers with a blue checkmark (the old, verified mark); accounts with an “official” label that will replace the old verification mark; and accounts without either mark are all proposed by the Official label.
