Twitter is making changes to its privacy policy that will allow it to collect users’ biometric data and job history.
The company says that the data will be used for “safety, security, and identification purposes” as well as to “recommend potential jobs to you.”
The changes come as Elon Musk, the billionaire who recently acquired Twitter, has said that he wants to make the platform a more “inclusive” and “reliable” place. As expected, some privacy experts have raised concerns about the new data collection practices.
“This is a significant expansion of Twitter’s data collection powers,” said Peter Swire, a professor of law at the Georgia Institute of Technology. “It’s not clear why Twitter needs this data, and it’s certainly not clear why it needs to collect it without users’ explicit consent.”
Twitter has said that users will have the option to opt out of the data collection, but it is unclear how easy it will be to do so.
