U.S. intensifies tech crackdown on China with focus on Huawei and TikTok

March 3, 2023

The U.S. government is intensifying its technology crackdown on China, with a focus on Chinese companies such as Huawei and TikTok. The Biden administration is focusing on prohibiting US companies from selling chips to Huawei and is developing a strategy to remove TikTok from American app stores.

This action follows previous bans imposed by the Trump administration, as well as an ongoing dispute with China over technology and data security. The Biden administration wants to improve America’s technological capabilities and security while limiting China’s access to sensitive data and advanced technologies.

In an effort to substantially constrain China’s capacity to develop its own semiconductor industry, the US has persuaded the Netherlands and Japan to decrease their exports of cutting-edge chipmaking equipment to China.

According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the agreement, which was reached between the countries last month, appears to limit sales of two key emerging chipmaking techniques known as extreme UV and argon fluoride immersion to China.

Furthermore, the US government is concerned about Huawei because it believes the company poses a national security risk. The United States is attempting to restrict Huawei’s access to semiconductor chips, which are critical components for its products. The company’s operations will be hampered as a result of this action.

TikTok, a popular video-sharing app, has also been scrutinized by the US government because of its ties to China. The Biden administration is working on a plan to remove the app from American app stores, making it unavailable to US citizens. The app has been accused of disclosing user information to the Chinese government, which the company denies.
