U.S. To Treat Cyberattacks With Similar Concern As Terrorism

June 7, 2021

Last week, the FBI and Justice Department prioritized rules on ransomware attacks, informing news agencies that cyberattacks will be treated on roughly the same level of concern as terrorist attacks.

FBI Director Christopher Wray, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, compared the fight against ransomware attacks to the situation the U.S. faced after 9/11.

He also singled out the Russian government for harboring many of those behind the various brands of ransomware.

Anne Neuberger, the deputy assistant to the president and Deputy National Security Advisor for Cyber and Emerging Technology, has sent a letter to private-sector leaders warning them to prepare for potential attacks and take more security measures to prevent further attacks.

These actions and comments follow the attacks on the Colonial Pipeline and the recent attack on global meat processor JBS.
