On Tuesday, Verizon Communications announced plans to make Google’s Messages the default messaging app on all Android devices being sold next year.
While Google’s Messages have similar features to Apple’s iMessage, Rich Communication Services (RCS) Technology, which replaces SMS-based texts, allows users to send and receive high-quality photos and videos. Users can also chat over Wi-Fi and mobile and know when messages are being read among several other features.
Earlier this year, T-Mobile and AT & T said they would make Google’s messaging app the default app on all Android devices.
According to Verizon, “Customers using Verizon’s Message+ app will also get full access to RCS capabilities by the end of the year.”
