Walmart is giving roughly 50,000 non-store employees access to a generative AI app that can help with tasks, like summarizing long documents and assisting in creation of new content.
The app, called “My Assistant,” is part of the company’s broader “Me@Campus” app for employees. It combines data from Walmart with third-party large language models.
Walmart says the move is about more than just boosting productivity and that it hopes the app will free workers from monotonous, repetitive tasks and allow them to focus on more creative and strategic work.
“We believe that generative AI can be a powerful tool for our associates,” said Donna Morris, Walmart’s chief people officer. “It can help them work faster and more efficiently, and it can also free them up to do the work that only humans can do.”
In addition to helping employees, Walmart also believes that generative AI can be used to improve the customer experience. For example, the app could be used to generate personalized recommendations for customers or to answer customer questions.
Walmart says it plans to expand the app to more employees in the coming months.
