What Layoffs at Tech Startups Could Offer CIOs

August 24, 2022

With nearly 37,000 layoffs in the technology sector in 2022, the layoffs in the technology startup world could offer companies a hiring opportunity.

As early as 2022, 68,642 startup workers were laid off. While it remains unclear whether the layoffs will translate into an influx of tech talent in the enterprise realm, there are indications that enterprise IT can benefit from welcoming workers in high-demand areas in search of new jobs.

Enterprise leaders must therefore adapt to the needs of incoming talent and adopt strategies to increase attractiveness. One way to appeal to laid-off workers is to add them, contractually or temporarily, to those interested in such opportunities.

“Building your strategy around not necessarily hiring them as full-time employees, but maybe hiring them as freelancers may be more successful,” said J.P. Gownder, VP and principal analyst at Forrester.

It is important that executives use outsourced service companies for critical projects, especially during an uncertain economy. It is also important that they remain aware of the microeconomic conditions when a major, long-term recession sets in, as it could reshape the current picture of the labor market.
