Microsoft will launch its new operating system Windows 11 without the Skype application on the new OS instead, Microsoft Teams will be added by default into Windows 11.

While Microsoft bought Skype for $8.5 billion 10 years ago, major complaints about updates, poor performance, and questionable design decisions led to a decline in the popularity of an app that many valued a decade or so ago.

Explaining the new trend, CCS analyst Angela Ashenden said: “Microsoft has been moving beyond Skype for several years now, with Teams being its strategic voice and video technology for the new era. As Teams’ adoption skyrocketed in the last year, this really sealed Skype’s status as a legacy technology for Microsoft. The removal of Skype as a pre-installed app helps reinforce Teams as the preferred solution from Microsoft’s perspective, emphasizing that this is where its investment will be moving forward.”
