YouTube issues update on iOS crashes

December 1, 2022

YouTube said it had resolved a problem that had caused the platform to be unavailable to thousands of users on Wednesday.

It’s unclear what’s causing the outage, but it appears to be limited to iOS. It doesn’t appear to be the result of a recent app update, and devices running on a 17.46.4 version are currently fine.

“YouTube app on iOS devices should now be working fine with no crashes,” tweeted YouTube.

YouTube users began reporting problems with the app on iPhones and iPads, with many claiming that it crashes every time they try to open a video. By 3 p.m. on Wednesday, more than 7,500 users had reported problems with the app on DownDetector, with 75 percent of complaints citing problems with the app itself. Downdetector tracks outages by compiling status reports from a variety of sources, including user-submitted errors on its platform, and found over 6,000 incidents of people reporting issues with YouTube.

The problems were widespread, affecting users in countries other than the United States such as Canada, Poland, and Sweden.
