Yubico Gifts Ukrainian Government, Energy agencies 20,000 Security Keys

May 11, 2022

Yubico has distributed 10,000 security keys and will donate another 10,000 to the Ukrainian government and energy authorities. Security keys are crucial to closing the loopholes associated with user passwords.

Ukrainian organizations that use the security keys include SSSCIP, State Service of Special Communication and Information Protection of Ukraine; Ministry of Digital Transformation, heading IT moderation and next generation of government e-services; Government-owned energy companies and power plants; Ukraine’s .UA domain managing organization Hostmaster.UA.

According to Stina Ehrensvard, CEO and founder of Yubico, the company worked with Hideez and the Ukrainian government to develop a smart card that combines technology with FIDO security keys. The smart card was vital in creating one access point for all services.

Ehrensvard pointed out that 2FA, via SMS and authentication apps, is not strong enough to withstand the current level of cyberattacks.

“We started this work 10 years ago and this is the evidence that we have developed something that works, that is scalable and that makes a difference. Half of the war is in the physical world and half is in the cyber world, and if heating systems communications systems go down, a country will not function,” Ehrensvard said.
