3 VMware VPs quits for new opportunities

December 14, 2022

Three senior vice presidents are leaving software giant VMware as Broadcom looks to acquire the company for $61 billion.

Tom Gillis, SVP and GM of VMware’s Networking and Advanced Security Business Group; Mark Lohmeyer, SVP and GM of VMware’s Cloud Infrastructure Business Group; and Ajay Patel, SVP and GM of VMware’s Modern Apps, are among the departing executives.

VMware attributed the departures to Broadcom’s impending $69 billion acquisition of the vendor, noting that the three executives were leaving for “new opportunities.” VMware shareholders have already approved the deal, but Broadcom faces a $1.5 billion termination fee if the deal falls through.

This comes at an awkward time for both VMware and Broadcom, as European Union regulators have stated that they will scrutinize the terms of the merger before signing off on it.

Four executives have been called up from the bench to replace the departing employees.
Umesh Mahajan will take over as president of the networking and advanced security business group. Purnima Padmanabhan will lead the modern apps and management business group, while Krish Prasad will lead the cloud infrastructure business group. Jason Rolleston will lead the security division.
