OpenAI developing GitHub rival after service disruptions

March 4, 2026 OpenAI is developing an internal code-hosting platform that could compete with Microsoft-owned GitHub, according to a report from The Information. The project was reportedly triggered by repeated GitHub service disruptions that affected OpenAI’s own engineering teams and may eventually be offered to external customers.

The effort remains in its early stages and is not expected to be ready for several months.

Employees have discussed making the repository platform available for purchase to OpenAI’s customer base, which would position the company in direct competition with GitHub, a subsidiary of Microsoft, one of OpenAI’s largest investors.

GitHub has experienced multiple outages in recent months, some attributed to issues tied to its migration to Microsoft’s Azure cloud. According to The Information, these disruptions prompted OpenAI engineers to explore alternatives for more reliable code management and collaboration.

If commercialized, the move would mark a notable strategic shift. While companies such as Google and Meta operate internal code platforms, they do not sell them externally. Offering a competing repository service would expand OpenAI’s product footprint beyond models and APIs into developer infrastructure.

The reported initiative comes amid broader financial and strategic scrutiny. Recent funding rounds have valued OpenAI between US$730 billion and US$840 billion, depending on the source, following a major raise involving investors including SoftBank, Amazon and Nvidia. At the same time, analysts have questioned the long-term profitability of large AI labs given significant infrastructure, training and compute costs.

The potential GitHub alternative also surfaces during a period of heightened public attention for OpenAI, including controversy surrounding its defence-related partnerships and visible shifts in consumer sentiment toward competing AI platforms.

The development signals a possible expansion of competition within the developer tooling ecosystem. If OpenAI moves forward with a commercial offering, it would extend rivalry with Microsoft from AI models into the core infrastructure layer that underpins software development workflows.
