Thunderbird email client gets major overhaul ahead of Supernova release

February 15, 2023

Thunderbird, Mozilla’s email client, is getting a complete overhaul ahead of its major July release dubbed “Supernova.” The next update will include a new interface, performance improvements, and support for more advanced encryption protocols.

Supernova has been in development by the Thunderbird team for two years, with the goal of making it a more modern and user-friendly email client. The new interface will be simpler and more user-friendly, with customizable tabs, themes, and icons. Thunderbird will be faster and more responsive as a result of the performance enhancements, especially when dealing with large amounts of email.

Alessandro Castellani, product design manager, blogged about the release plans saying the client’s complicated history, has led to it being compared to “an old, fragile LEGO tower” that appears to be on the verge of collapsing at any moment.

Another significant change in Supernova is the addition of support for more advanced encryption protocols, which will improve email security. Thunderbird will also make managing multiple email accounts easier, thanks to a unified inbox that allows users to see all of their messages in one place.

Overall, Thunderbird’s redesign aims to make the email client more competitive in a market dominated by web-based email services. Thunderbird hopes that these updates will attract users who value privacy, security, and customization options in their email clients.

The Mozilla Foundation added that the app could be monetized to some extent by moving Thunderbird into a wholly owned subsidiary called MZLA Technologies Corporation.
