Meta introduce new privacy setting to limit AI data use

September 1, 2023

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, introduced a new privacy setting that allows users to ask the company not to use their data to train its artificial intelligence (AI) models. The new setting, called “Generative AI Data Subject Rights,” can be found in the “Privacy Center” section of Facebook’s website.

To use the setting, users must first provide their name, email address, and country of residence. They can then choose from three options. First is access, download, or correct their personal information. Second is delete their personal information. The third is submit a request for a different issue.

If a user chooses to delete their personal information, Meta will remove it from the training data for its AI models. However, the company notes that it may not be able to remove all of the user’s data from the training data, as some of it may have been combined with other data.

The new privacy setting is only available to users in certain countries, including the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Meta says it is working to make the setting available to users in more countries in the future.
