Google Messages to use Google Account for multi-device pairing

September 13, 2023

Google Messages is working on a Google Account-based pairing feature that would allow users to send and receive messages from their phone number on other devices, such as tablets and desktops.

The feature was discovered in the latest beta version of Messages for Android, which includes strings of code that suggest the ability to “send and receive messages on devices signed into your Google account.”

The current method for pairing Messages with other devices requires users to scan a QR code, which can be inconvenient and time-consuming. A Google Account-based pairing system would be much more seamless, as users would simply need to sign in to their Google account on the device they want to use Messages on.

In addition to the Google Account-based pairing feature, the latest beta version of Messages also includes a number of other improvements, such as the ability to schedule messages and the ability to send emoji reactions to messages.
