DEF CON get the boot from Caesars in Las Vegas but refuses to fold

February 7, 2024 In an unforeseen turn that shook the foundations of the cybersecurity world, DEF CON, the most revered gathering in the hacker community, has been compelled to relocate from its long-established base at Caesars Entertainment. This year, the conference will unfold within the expansive halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center and the Sahara Hotel, charting a new course for an event synonymous with the cutting edge of digital security.

The abrupt venue change, prompted by what’s described as a strategic pivot by Caesars, has sent ripples through the cybersecurity realm. There has always been a tension between the hotel. Bomb scares and a recent ransomware attack on the hotel undoubtedly increased these tensions.

DEF CON attendees also take advantage of the low rate rooms but not spend time gambling, which is how the hotel subsidizes the room rates.  An article in the Register quoted an exchange between a floor manager and a conference attendee that illustrated this. “We hate you guys – you stay in your hotel rooms and don’t gamble.” To which the DEF CON attendee responded: “That’s because we studied math at school.”

Yet, the transition is being heralded not as a setback but as a watershed moment for DEF CON. The move opens a realm of possibilities for innovation, allowing for expanded programming, larger collaborative spaces, and the integration of the latest technological advancements into the fabric of the conference.

Apparently those who thought this might be huge blow to DEF CON have learned not to bet against this resilient group.
