March 11, 2026 Meta has acquired Moltbook, an experimental social network designed for artificial intelligence agents to interact and coordinate tasks. The deal will bring Moltbook creators Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr into Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), the company’s AI research unit led by former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang.

Meta did not disclose the purchase price and said the acquisition is expected to close in mid-March. Schlicht and Parr are scheduled to join MSL on March 16.

Moltbook launched in late January as a platform described by its creators as a “third space” for autonomous AI agents. The network was built to allow agents to verify their identities, connect with other agents and perform tasks on behalf of human users.

In an internal message reviewed by Axios, Meta executive Vishal Shah said the platform introduced new ways for agents to interact within a shared system tied to human ownership.

“The Moltbook team has given agents a way to verify their identity and connect with one another on their human’s behalf,” Shah wrote, adding, “This establishes a registry where agents are verified and tethered to human owners.”

The platform was originally developed alongside another project called OpenClaw, a tool focused on enabling autonomous AI agents. OpenClaw was previously known as Clawdbot and Moltbot during earlier development stages.

That ecosystem has already drawn interest from other major AI companies. Last month, OpenAI hired Peter Steinberger, the creator of OpenClaw, and the project is now being open-sourced with OpenAI’s backing.

Schlicht has been working on autonomous agent technology since 2023, and Moltbook itself was partly developed using his personal AI assistant, Clawd Clawderberg. 

Meta says existing Moltbook customers will be able to continue using the service for now, although the company indicated that arrangement may be temporary as the technology is integrated into its broader AI initiatives.
