AWS partners Element Six to develop synthetic diamonds for quantum networking

April 17, 2023

The Amazon Web Services (AWS) Center for Quantum Networking has collaborated with De Beers Group’s Element Six business to develop synthetic diamonds that can function as nodes in quantum networks. This collaboration intends to provide scalable synthetic diamond solutions to accelerate the advancement of quantum technologies like as secure networks, sensors, and computers.

Diamond memory nodes will be used by researchers to allow quantum communication to go larger distances without breaking down. Because natural diamonds lack the purity required to scale quantum memory, synthetic diamonds are being produced.

Bart Machielse, senior research scientist at AWS, stated in an interview with Network Computing that the same growth techniques used in the semiconductor industry are utilized to produce these diamonds, making it possible to produce these diamonds with a level of purity and shape that does not exist in nature. This makes synthetic diamonds a powerful tool for optimizing the diamond host for quantum memories.

Daniel Twitchen, executive director of business development and technologies sales at Element Six, also shared in an interview with Network Computing that this collaboration aims to develop a scalable synthetic diamond solution that can be used in the future to enhance the development of quantum technologies, including secure networks, sensors, and computers.

The use of subatomic matter in diamonds makes this advancement in data delivery feasible. With the increasing demand for improved and more secure communication, this partnership between AWS and Element Six is expected to have a significant impact on the advancement of quantum networking.
