Biden Openly Supports Unions, Takes Aim At Amazon

April 7, 2022

At an event on Wednesday, President Biden openly expressed his administration’s support for unions.

The U.S. President widely seen as the most pro-union president in decades, also called out Amazon for its action to prevent workers from forming a union.

“And by the way, by the way, Amazon here we come. Watch. Watch,” Biden said during a speech to the North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU) Legislative Conference.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki clarified Biden’s position on unions and Amazon, saying the president’s statement did not mean the administration would directly interfere in such efforts.

“What he was conveying is his long-time support for collective bargaining, for the rights of workers to organize, and their decision to do exactly that in this case,” Psaki said.

Biden has forced out administration officials seen by labour unions as anti-labour, and reversed former President Donald Trump’s rules that critics said weakened worker protections.

Biden also set up a task force to reverse decades of declining union membership and power. According to Biden, the task force will “make sure the choice to join a union belongs to workers alone.”
