Google announces new AI-powered IDE Project IDX announced

August 10, 2023

Google has announced Project IDX, a new AI-powered cloud-based integrated development environment (IDE). IDX is designed to make it easier to build, manage, and deploy full-stack web and multiplatform applications, with popular frameworks and languages.

Project IDX is meticulously designed to streamline the creation, management, and deployment of comprehensive web and multiplatform applications, employing popular frameworks and languages. The minds behind this innovation, Bre Arder, Kirupa Chinnathambi, Ashwin Raghav Mohan Ganesh, Erin Kidwell, and Roman Nurik, emphasize its potential in their announcement.

While Project IDX is not yet available to the general public and is referred to as “vaporware,” Google has initiated a waitlist to engage enthusiastic developers. Additionally, Google has achieved a major security milestone by implementing end-to-end encryption for all RCS conversations in its Messages app, encompassing group chats. RCS, an advanced messaging standard, ensures heightened security compared to traditional SMS and MMS.

IDX is powered by Codey, a foundational AI model trained on code and built on Google’s PaLM 2 language model. Codey can provide code completion, code generation, and improved code quality.

IDX is still in development, but Google has created a waitlist for interested developers. The company plans to make IDX available to the public in the coming months.
