Google “steps in it” again with new AI launch failures

May 27, 2024 Google’s introduction of AI Overview, a feature designed to integrate more sophisticated AI capabilities into its search engine, has not gone as planned. The feature, which aims to enhance user experience by providing detailed answers to complex queries, has instead been doling out bizarre and sometimes dangerous advice due to its reliance on unreliable web sources.

Recent examples of AI Overview’s gaffes include suggesting that users add non-toxic glue to pizza to prevent the cheese from sliding off, an idea it likely lifted from a satirical Reddit post. Even more alarming, it advised ingesting rocks daily to supplement dietary minerals, a notion it seems to have drawn from a spoof article.

These errors have become the subject of social media entertainment, with users actively sharing screenshots of the AI’s most ludicrous responses. One particular advice that caught attention was a hazardous cleaning tip, where AI Overview advised using “chlorine bleach and white vinegar” to clean washing machines—a combination that can release toxic chlorine gas.

While these blunders have highlighted the potential pitfalls of AI-driven search tools, they have also ignited discussions on the need for more robust AI vetting processes to prevent the dissemination of misleading information. Google has acknowledged the issues and is working on refining AI Overview to prevent such errors in the future.
