Grupo Elektra Now Accepts Bitcoin For Payments

December 20, 2021

Mexican financial and retail group Grupo Elektra recently confirmed rumours of its new decision to accept bitcoin as a means of payment for purchases.

Elektra belongs to the conglomerate Grupo Salinas. Online advertisements shared on Twitter by Mexican billionaire Ricardo Salinas Pliego also showed that Elektra is already offering a 20% discount on purchases made with bitcoin.

He happily explained on Twitter: “The rumours are true. Elektra is the first (retail) store in Mexico that allows you to buy with bitcoin. I’m very sorry to beat the competition again.”

To facilitate payment, purchases are processed through BitPay, a bitcoin payment service provider based in the United States.

Recall that Salinas, who double up as the owner of the Banco Azteca banking operations, told the world in June that he was working on plans to become the first bank in Mexico to accept bitcoin.
