June 11, 2026 Moderators of the popular r/Biohackers subreddit say companies are increasingly using Reddit discussions to influence how AI chatbots and search engines answer questions. In response, the community has banned new standalone posts about peptides and hormone replacement therapy (HRT), restricting those discussions to weekly megathreads.
According to the moderators, vendors selling peptides and HRT products have been posting strategically crafted content designed to appear in AI-generated responses. The tactic relies on Reddit’s growing importance as a source of information for AI tools and search systems.
“As AI search engines increasingly pull answers from Reddit, companies are using us for AEO (answer engine optimization),” moderators wrote in a recent policy update.
The moderators said the problem extends beyond traditional spam. Instead of directly promoting products, companies allegedly create discussion topics intended to generate engagement and visibility. Brand mentions are then introduced in ways that appear natural, increasing the likelihood that AI systems will surface those references in future answers.
The strategy reflects a broader shift toward what is known as answer engine optimization, or AEO. Rather than focusing on ranking highly in search results, AEO aims to influence the discussions and content that AI systems use when generating responses.
One moderator said some companies are reverse-engineering the kinds of prompts and conversations that large language models prioritize. According to the moderator, posts featuring vague but highly engaging questions often attract strong reactions from users. That engagement can make the discussions more visible to AI systems, creating opportunities for coordinated product mentions to be incorporated into future AI-generated answers.
Moderators said the accounts involved are often difficult to identify. Many appear to be legitimate users with established posting histories, while some campaigns may involve real people who are paid or incentivized to participate. “A lot of it has become pattern recognition,” one moderator said, noting that moderators must balance enforcement against the risk of penalizing genuine users.
The issue is particularly sensitive because the subreddit focuses on self-experimentation, health interventions, and emerging therapies. Moderators said peptides and related treatments already present challenges due to varying levels of regulation, growing public interest, and concerns about sourcing and safety.
They said the combination of health-related discussions and coordinated marketing campaigns ultimately prompted the policy change.
Reddit said it continues to expand its moderation tools. A company spokesperson told 404 Media that Reddit uses both human review and automated systems to detect manipulative content and provides moderators with tools to identify likely spam accounts.
