Sam Altman steps down as CEO of OpenAI

November 17, 2023 OpenAI has announced a significant leadership transition, with Sam Altman stepping down as CEO and Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati taking over as interim CEO.

Altman’s departure comes after a review process by OpenAI’s board, which concluded he was not “consistently candid in his communications with the board, affecting its ability to perform its duties.” The board cited this loss of confidence in his leadership abilities as the reason for his departure.

Murati has been a key member of OpenAI’s leadership team for the past five years and has been instrumental in the company’s growth into a global AI leader. Her extensive experience in research, product, and safety functions at OpenAI, along with her expertise in AI governance and policy, positions her as a qualified leader for this interim role. The board of directors has expressed confidence in Murati’s capabilities and expects a smooth transition while they search for a permanent CEO.

The board reaffirmed its commitment to OpenAI’s mission to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. They recognized Altman’s significant contributions to the founding and growth of OpenAI but emphasized the need for new leadership moving forward.

Additionally, Greg Brockman will step down as chairman of the board but will continue in his role at the company, reporting to the CEO. OpenAI’s board, which includes a mix of independent directors and chief scientists, maintains its focus on advancing the mission of OpenAI and adhering to the principles of its charter.

This leadership change marks a critical juncture in OpenAI’s history, as the company navigates the evolving landscape of AI research and development, striving to balance innovation with ethical and responsible AI governance.
