Ubuntu ‘Bionic’ Release Responsible for Microsoft Azure Outage

September 1, 2022

Microsoft has confirmed that some Azure customers who have upgraded Canonical Ubuntu on Azure virtual machines may encounter problems with the domain name DNS system.

The company explained that the bug was caused by DNS issues in the “Bionic” Ubuntu release and that the problem affects users running Canonical Ubuntu 18.04 on Azure virtual machines (VMs).

The Azure technical glitch began around 2 a.m. ET on August 30, according to Microsoft. Azure Container Apps (ACA), Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), Azure Database for PostgreSQL, Application Insights, Log Analytics and the Azure VMware solution were all affected.

“Starting at approximately 06: 00 UTC on 30 Aug 2022, a number of customers running Ubuntu 18.04 (bionic) VMs recently upgraded to systemd version 237-3ubuntu10.54 reported experiencing DNS errors when trying to access their resources. Reports of this issue are confined to this single Ubuntu version,” Microsoft reported on the Azure Service Health website.

Microsoft’s engineering team has developed a remedy for Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) clusters, which has helped restore the majority of affected clusters. However, in some AKS nodes, auto remediation diagnosis did not fix the problem. Therefore, Azure Kubernetes Service and Azure Container Apps are not available.
